Toronto, August 15, 2025: Facts are building to expose the foolishness of the unrealistic Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate the federal Liberal government plans to foist on Canadians, beginning in just a few months. Members of the Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses Canada (CCMBC) are encouraging Ontario Premier Doug Ford to join with Alberta and pressure PM Mark Carney to scrap this misguided policy. CCMBC President Catherine Swift noted that “Alberta has spoken out and exposed this policy for what it is – impossible to achieve, dictatorial to Canadians and damaging to our economy at a time business is already struggling and unemployment increasing. Ontario, the home of the auto industry in Canada, should join with Alberta in encouraging PM Carney to get rid of this unworkable policy.”

The notion of government forcing Canadians by law to purchase any consumer item has no place in a democracy. Consumers should be free to buy an EV if they so choose and not because of a government dictate. Demand for EVs has softened in the past couple of years, and there is little if any possibility the targets imposed by the government for EV sales – which begin in January 2026 – will be met. Swift added “The auto industry itself has petitioned Carney to abolish this mandate. They believe it will be very damaging to the industry at a time US tariff pressures are mounting, and will result in higher vehicle costs for consumers when inflation is still a threat and the cost of living is a major issue for Canadians.”

A recent Leger public opinion poll found 71 per cent of Canadians oppose the EV mandate. Their reasons include the fact that EVs remain very expensive, there is a shortage of charging infrastructure and a lack of confidence in the vehicles themselves. Swift concluded “Getting rid of this impractical and unachievable policy should be a no-brainer for the Liberal government. If Ford added his voice to Alberta’s to encourage Carney to do the right thing for Canadian consumers, jobs in the auto sector and the economy as a whole, that should seal the deal.”
