Following the CCMBC’s Annual Gala Dinner with business members on May 13, the message from the Canadian small- and medium-sized business community is clear and unequivocal – business wants a trade deal with the US as soon as possible. CCMBC President Catherine Swift noted “The uncertainty has gone on long enough and the lack of a deal is increasingly causing job loss and business failure in Canada.”

PM Mark Carney’s video to Canadians is creating a great deal of concern among Canadian businesses. To further Carney’s theme of moving away from the US in trading relations, he seems to have implied a much greater plan to divorce Canada from its largest trading partner. This promises to be an enormous mistake, motivated by political instincts to benefit Liberals at the expense of the welfare of the Canadian economy and the standard of living of average Canadians. CCMBC President Catherine Swift noted “This is a gigantic gamble with Canada’s economic future and something Canadians have never voted for.”
